The one thing that still amazes me is that the internet cafes and business are all still using old kit. For example CRT screens everywhere, in the UK a 17" flat screen (sometimes two) is the norm. In India they still seem to be clinging onto their 15" eye straining CRT's! Even the machines are old and usually running a dodgy version of Windows XP. For me this sums up India, they make things work for years and years. You just have to look around to see motorbikes and auto rickshaws that must be 20 years plus old, not to mention their archaic online train booking system!
Years of service but at what cost?
I firmly believe that most IT kit should be replaced every 4 years, especially in a business environment. The slower your machine is the less productive you are, fact! Granted in India labour is cheap (the average Indian takes home £550 a year, remember that's a average, in rural India people live on around £1.60 a day), so maybe making a machine last 10 years and that person been less productive somehow equates to a winning formula, it certainly seems to work as India's a booming economy.
But we are not India, we need to keep ahead in technology, continue to invest in technology to make us more productive and embrace IT to make our lives easier. I doubt whether that will be the last time I visit India, I think in 20 years time things will be very different.
